Business Continuity management provides the overall framework that links the analysis and management of risks with corresponding emergency and crisis response and with longer-term continuity strategies. These relationships can be seen in the BCM framework diagram.

The output from this stage is typically a framework for continuity management containing a process model of the client business, identifying those processes and resources critical to the continued operation of the business, an impact analysis linked to the results of the strategic risk management process, and a set of detailed continuity plans covering each critical process.

Components of the approach include:

• Process modelling - identification of the processes carried out by the business, decoupled from the organisational hierarchy, and determination of the processes critical to the conduct of the business, and their characteristics in terms of allowable outage etc
• Business impact analysis - examining the estimated likelihood and consequences of threats to each process, identifying mitigation and continuity strategies and prioritising them for management action
• Development of detailed continuity plans including activation criteria, detailed action checklists, roles and responsibilities, to ensure impacts are minimised and mission critical activities are maintained or restored within acceptable time limits.
